Bull & Bush Pub
The younger sister of the Bull & Bush Pub in Gaborone is jokingly referred to as the 'Bullet & Ambush' after someone was shot here on opening night (a long time ago).
Things have certainly quietened down since then, so you shouldn't worry about coming here. In fact, the Bull & Bush is probably the most popular haunt among ex-pats in town. The pub hosts a variety of regular events including their raucous quiz nights, and like its bigger sister pub, the Bull & Bush is your best bet for a thick steak and cold beer.

Festi Viandes
In a city where fish dishes are the norm, this meat-lover's paradise, discreetly located on the 1st floor of an unremarkable building, is a happy exception. Sink your teeth into a juicy beefsteak or a succulent brochette (skewered meat). Enough proteins? Wood-fired pizzas are also available.

Du Peuple
The owner of this little medina restaurant has the tourist trade cornered and rightly so. Hearty meat and couscous dishes are served off an assembly line, and tea and watermelon come free with desert. It's a bright and pleasant spot just inside the medina walls next to the Hôtel de Paris.

Saloon Steakhouse Grill & Disco Pub
If you've every wanted to eat on what appears to be the movie set for an American western in Tunisia, then this surreal restaurant around 2km from the Ville Nouvelle should not be missed. Hearty steaks are the deserved specialty though you have to pay extra for the custom sauces.

Butcher Boys
This stylish ‘meat market’s’ catchphrase ‘grill by design’ refers as much to its clientele as to its menu. The choice cuts (you get to choose) are popular with business people and the ‘it’ market.

Hunter's Steak House
Hunter's is another high-class restaurant close to Tamarind, clearly displaying the influence of its German owners in the hefty parade of meat dishes. Aimed mainly at tourists, it's often closed for a month or so in June.

JW's Steakhouse
JW's is more Texan than the Alamo, with juicy steaks and a rodeo interior. Expats adore it, and regularly order up big from the classic menu and extensive wine list.

Joop’s Place
In a most unlikely location at the rear of a shopping centre, Durbanites flock to this unpretentious place for its high-quality steaks. Rare indeed.

Porterhouse Restaurant
Steak-lovers should make this discreetly swish 1st-floor restaurant their first port of call: apart from a few token dishes such as chicken kiev, the menu here is entirely dedicated to the art of carving chunks of cow, and with a two-person Chateaubriand for just around KSh900 it's easy to get into the moo-d (ahem).

Marlin
Housed in the colonial-era Lusaka Club, this perennial, wood-panelled favourite is the best steakhouse in Zambia. While they do serve gargantuan portions of every cut of meat under the sun, most guests come for the aged fillet with mushroom or pepper sauce. Reservations are strongly recommended.
