Sandwich restaurants in Africa

  1. A

    Mat'am al-Saraya

Beloved by the Corinthia set and well-to-do Libyans, this upmarket coffeehouse and restaurant serves high-quality food. The upstairs restaurant has a range of set menus with an emphasis on Lebanese cuisine, while you can also order lamb/seafood mbakbaké (lamb or seafood Libyan pasta) off the menu. The downstairs area is for snacks, including pizza, hamburgers and sandwiches, as well as an enticing range of desserts. The outdoor garden is a popular place to pass the evening with a nargileh.

  2. B

    Caracas

One of the better places to eat in the city centre, frequented by young and hip Tunisians, Caracas is built to resemble some version of the Latin American city. Well, there are faux stone walls and colonial archways but it's a modern restaurant with TVs tuned to Arab language music videos. The eclectic menu has everything from pizza to deli sandwiches and Tunisian and western standards. The enormous chicken omelette is a meal unto itself.

  3. C

    Cedars

This chic Lebanese restaurant is a favourite with Mohandiseen’s lunching ladies, then with a younger crowd later in the evening. Rattan chairs dot the spacious terrace, where there’s sheesha along with the better-than-average food: peppery muhammara (red-pepper salad), fresh and salty ayran (yoghurt drink) and big sandwiches stuffed with French fries. You can also get full meals from the grill.

  4. D

    Debonairs Pizza

The pizza at this fast-spreading South African chain is nothing special, but it's a good place for a quick and cheap lunch. There are tables inside, but take away and delivery is available ('we deliver smartly' is the restaurant's slightly odd tagline), as are a number of non-pizza options including tasty subs.

  5. E

    Amoun Restaurant

Sandwich stands and other cheap-eat possibilities are found on Sharia al-Mahatta and Sharia Televizyon. Two favourites with travellers are Amoun Restaurant, at the end of the souq near Luxor Temple, and neighbouring Al-Hussein.

  6. Restaurant Le Soleil

An extensive menu with a couple of vegetarian dishes. The service is attentive and it's a good place to try camel steak because you generally don't have to pre-order it as in other restaurants. They also do pizzas and sandwiches.
