Tej el-Khayem
Whether you eat indoors, in a Berber style tent or out on the sand, Tej el-Khayem serves up some of the best meals in Douz. The à la carte menu includes all the standards but if you order in advance and/or are part of a large group you can experiment with camel (around TD12) or try the coucha agneau - a local speciality of meat cooked underground in gargoulette (pottery). Wine and beer are served and dancing and performances can be arranged in advance.

La Lampe Magique
This magical place overlooking Plaza Uta el-Hammam serves delicious Moroccan staples in a grand setting. Three bright-blue floors include a laid-back lounge, a more formal dining area and a roof-top terrace. The menu – featuring favourites like lamb tajine with prunes and some great cooked salads – is better than average, but this place is really about atmosphere.

Al-Kasbah Restaurant
This place has a great flavour, with its central dining area and series of secluded booths decked out as Berber tents. Well-cooked Moroccan standards are the order of the day (individual courses can also be ordered), plus a paella that's worth the extra wait. Eat quickly though, as dishes tend to appear while you're still finishing the previous course.

La Casa Creativa
Upstairs, a quirky café serves fresh juices, homemade pies and pastries and an ever-changing array of tapas (vegetarian options are always available). For dinner, the formal downstairs restaurant serves slightly overpriced Canarian and international fare. The German owners also rent out a few apartments and arrange occasional yoga classes.

Fishpaste
Fishpaste is a rare thing - a Free State restaurant with a trendy, funky interior and an interesting modern fusion menu. Choose from blackened Canadian salmon with green-bean salad, Vietnamese prawn rolls or rolled pork fillet. The fashionably black-clad staff are super-friendly, the bar is buzzy and the prices extremely reasonable.

Casa Vieja
Just north of the GC-1 motorway, along the road to Fataga, this restaurant is run with passion. The 'Old House' has a real campo (countryside) feel. Plants festoon the low roof, canaries trill and the menu is unwaveringly authentic; try the grilled meat. There is live traditional music most weekends.

Casa Pablo
A grand old restaurant with a knight in armour lording it over the front door. Plenty of Spanish celebrity pics adorn the walls to leave you in no doubt that this is the place to come in Las Palmas for solid traditional cuisine. You can be a lightweight with an excellent tapas menu if you prefer.

A favourite Canarian species, the juice bar is a fabulous spot for breakfast, a quick lunch or a pick-me-up. The juices here, made on the spot with fresh and often local fruit, are outstanding and the cold and hot sandwiches are cheap and filling.
