Pizza restaurants in Africa

  1. A

    Mama Mia's

Expats swear by the thin-crusted, wood-oven-cooked pizza here. The pleasant outdoor garden dining area makes everything taste better. Spaghetti and kid-friendly chicken fingers also served.

  2. Ristorante Italiano Sarabanda

A small pizza joint with just a handful of tables, including a few out front, that does about a dozen different combinations of cheese, sauce, topping and dough. It is nicely laid out with colourful woven tablemats and deep-red walls adorned with local art. The wood-oven pizzas are delicious and big enough to share.

  3. B

    Pizzeria le Four

This is as good a place as any in the ville nouvelle to load up on pizza, and the dark-wood and brick surroundings take you halfway out of Morocco towards Italy. Alcohol is served, so late at night you sometimes find local men getting sloshed among the clientele. Watch out for the steep service tax added to bills.

  4. C

    Da Canio

Owned by Italians and dishing up a better class of pizza and pasta, the dining room is tastefully decked out in terracotta and stone. The 34-plus pizza choices are ideal for fussy families, and the pasta and risottos come recommended as well.

  5. D

    Les Trois Portes

Stone arches, tiled tables and a constant stream of happy customers make this cheerful little place one of the most popular joints in town. Run by a group of jovial sisters, it's warm and friendly with a full range of pizzas and pastas.

  6. E

    Col' Cacchio

One of the best reasons for venturing towards the Foreshore to eat is this long-running pizzeria. The 29 varieties of topping are inventive, the bases light and crispy, and there are even options for those avoiding wheat and dairy.

  7. F

    Pomodora

The location, in a cave under the seaside promenade, is the main draw at this restaurant and pizzeria. Diners get a fantastic view of the rocky coast; the menu reads like a novel, in six languages, no less.

  8. G

    Antony Pizza Factory

Less factory, rather a cosy brasserie, its staff still work hard to dish out heavily loaded pizzas and some rich pasta sauces. Popular with Melilla's young, it has a sunken snug area for quiet dining.

  9. H

    Mimmo’s Italian Deli

A pleasant place housed in an old building with an outdoor terrace; the wood-oven pizzas are great, pasta less so. (Okay, so we’re being picky, but the grating chairs can well, grate on you!).

    Taverna

This deservedly popular establishment serves excellent hand-thrown sweet or savoury fiteer (Egyptian pancake), pizza, and some of the best shwarma in town. Eat in or takeaway.

    Diva

Diva's thin-crust pizzas are excellent (the Mediterranean with wine-soaked aubergine is a favourite) and it does plenty of other Italian goodies in a faded Venetian-style atmosphere.
