A little slice of Europe, with loads of brass and mirrors, and waiters in long white aprons serving crusty baguette sandwiches. But this institution is best known for its pizza, with generous toppings. There’s a branch in Heliopolis.

New Cactus
Set on a commanding ridge up in Kiyovu, this restaurant has the views if you want to see Kigali by night. Outrageously popular with expats and well-to-do Rwandans alike, this place is always buzzing thanks to a good menu of French favourites and authentic pizzas. Fondues are available, plus there is a good wine list. Plan to spend liberally and you can live well.

Albatross
Just past Tip Top is the Albatross, another of the tourist-class restaurants that spend a great deal of attention on translating the menu and dressing the waiters in uniforms, and give at least a few nods in the direction of elegance, but that serve up unspectacular Tunisian and continental fare. Pizzas are good.

Pizza Lina
Pizza Lina has been flying the flag for tasty pizzas served bubbling hot from the oven for some years. The meat and fish dishes are also excellent, or you could order a scrummy plate of pasta. There's a pleasant modern dining room but the terrace is also agreeable. Not far from the stadium.

Biti Pizza
Biti is a popular air-conditioned restaurant that serves good Western-style pizzas, but more recommended are the delicious sweet and savoury fiteer (flaky Egyptian pizza), including the excellent tuna fiteer (E£20) or the fruit-and-nut dessert version (E£18).

Serving up a better class of pizza than the cardboard-base norm, the flamboyant Genoese owner also whips up tasty pasta dishes, including a vegetarian choice. Sit outside on the attractive terrace, thankfully separated from the main road by shrubs and trees.

Paparazzi
This smart pizza restaurant on the second floor of Sunset Boulevard (on the non-bay side) is a winner. It's far pricier than any other pizzeria in Mauritius, but the quality suggests why. There's free delivery if you're feeling lazy.

Don Camillo
We're not convinced the staff are Italian, but in most other respects Don Camillo delivers the authentic thin'n'crispy goods to a thoroughly edible standard. Takeaway is also available, though it'll cost you extra for the box.

Le Pizzeria
The pizzas here are excellent - a bit pricey, but they're much larger than what you'll get elsewhere. It's in the heart of town and is a good place to line the stomach before dancing the night away.
