Iguana Lounge
Next to Fusion and incongruously situated facing an Esso garage, Iguana Lounge is one of our favourite places in town. For upscale Mexican - excellent burritos and chili con carne - look no further. Reserve a table in the charming back garden as they're hard to come by otherwise.

Siesta Bar & Restaurant
You say mzungu, they say gringo…we just say olé! This is quite possibly the only Mexican restaurant in East Africa, set in a fine garden above the harbour by the Nyali Bridge. It's great for a sunset beer (or tequila if you've got the cojones) and the near-authentic food comes highly recommended.

Chili's
The American pseudo-Mexican chain now occupies a spot on the Nile where Naguib Mahfouz used to hold court - as Cairo goes, so goes the world. All-you-can-eat salsa and chips and a 'build your own fajita' platter satisfy both homesick expats and middle-class Egyptians eager for exotic flavours.

Mamma Rosa
This place serves hearty Mexican and Italian dishes, including fajitas de pollo (soft Mexican tortilla stuffed with chicken) and tagliatelle with king prawns, broccoli, garlic and chilli. The portions will keep rumbling tummies at bay for hours.

Casa Gladys
Despite the disquieting name, this restaurant on the seafront does not serve cups of tea and poached eggs on toast, but far more exotic fare. The owner is from Venezuela so that country's cuisine is tastily represented, as are spicy Mexican dishes.

Fat Cactus
This much loved Mexican operation – its original location in Mowbray is still going strong – brings its fine fajitas and margaritas to town, living up to its mantra of ‘always open, always cooking’.
