Mediterranean restaurants in Africa

  1. A

    Alizia

Al fresco dining that's sort of French, sort of Italian, and quintessentially Marrakshi. Good food and even better people-watching: in one corner of the garden, local internet daters attempt to impress one another, while in another chic Moroccan girlfriends out of a long-lost Marrakesh episode of Sex in the City dish over dinner and drinks.

    Serenade

Tucked up a dark cobblestone alley in eastern Piazza is this magnificent Mediterranean eatery. Peruse the creative menu, laden with succulent treats like braised lamb with caramelized onions, lentils, lemon and raisin orange couscous. There are vegetarian delights and divine desserts.

    La Lonja

Inside an old Canary house with balconies overlooking the seafront, La Lonja is perhaps the city's most upscale restaurant, with a mix of Canarian, Castillian and Mediterranean fare like paella, suckling pig and roasted cheese with mojo.

    Jose's

Platters of delicious Mediterranean foods mean you'll understand why this quality eatery is a local favourite. When it's plate-breaking night (Fridays and Saturdays), you'll understand why there's so much outdoor seating. Great fun.

    Gaia

The basement level of the former Linden Hotel is now an Afro-Mediterranean restaurant designed in earthy tones and with a suitably health-oriented menu to match. It's a bit out of the way, but worth the trip.

  6. A Gruta

If you're not heading on to Mozambique (or Portugal for that matter), this is a great place to sample the flavours of Iberia. It fills up at night, making for a nearly authentic Mediterranean-style ambience.

An unpretentious place on a side road leading up to the Grand Socco, Africa dishes up good Moroccan standards quickly and without fuss. Alcohol is served.

    Bread & Wine

Hidden away down a dirt road as you approach town along Rte 45, this place is worth searching out. It’s known for its breads, pizzas, cured meats and tasty Mediterranean-style cuisine.

    De Oewer

Next to De Volkskombuis, De Oewer has an open-air section shaded by oak trees beside the river. It offers lighter meals with a more Mediterranean emphasis.

Le Grand Café de la Poste

Once a French colonial hotel and favourite café of the dread Pasha Glaoui, this place has recently been restored to its flapper-era, potted-palm glory. Mediterranean chef Cyril Lignac and Moroccan Sana Gamas create a seamless blend of cuisines in signature dishes: roast chicken with wild Berber thyme and olives, and a stellar salad with local goat cheese and citrus-herb vinaigrette that will have you smacking your lips for days after.
