    Furusato Japanese Restaurant

Behind the Sarit Centre, this is a very stylish place with seductive set Japanese meals including sushi, teppanyaki and tempura. The sushi and sashimi here are delicious. Reservations are recommended.

    Restaurant Akasaka

A wonderful Japanese restaurant next to the Sixeighty Hotel. It's always a little quiet, but this fits the stylish Japanese décor and the food is very authentic. There's even a tatami room (reserve in advance) where you can eat at traditional low tables. Akasaka runs the full gamut of Japanese cuisine including udon noodles, sushi sets, tempura, teriyaki and sukiyaki as well as great miso soup. Good-value set lunches are also available.

  3. C

    Torii

The theatrical interior of this upmarket Japanese restaurant comes complete with a wooden sushi bar, Japanese sushi chefs, arty flower arrangements and a ceiling illuminated with hundreds of twinkling lights. It claims to be 'the gateway to sushi and self discovery', and while we can't confirm the latter we certainly enjoyed the former. Service is exemplary.

  4. D

    Sukothay

This Japanese-Thai restaurant has an easy-on-the-eye minimalist interior with two floors and open-plan kitchen. The Zen feel continues with a menu of rave dishes from both cuisines, including green and red curries, papaya salad, sushi and tempura. The wine list is better than the oriental norm.

  5. Le Fuji

Simple, pared-back design and authentic Japanese dishes make this tranquil place a welcome break from the fanfare and traditional menus of other Rabat restaurants. Go for delicious sushi, sashimi or tempura or fill up on one of the colourful bento boxes. A good option for vegetarians.

    Ben-kei

This jazzy Japanese place attracts Norwood's young trendies with its fashionable styling and authentic cooking. If you have had enough red meat, the sushi offers welcome reprieve from the braai, and it's the best in town at these prices. Try the all-you-can-eat sushi platter (R110).

  7. F

    Kyoto Sushi Garden

Beechwood furnishings and subtle lighting lend a Zen-calm air to this superior Japanese restaurant, owned by an LA expat but with a Japanese chef expert at turning out sushi and sashimi. Their prawn noodle salad is excellent as is their Asian Mary cocktail.

    Minato

Make a booking or come early as the Japanese chef and proprietor, Muraoka-san, only serves 35 people per night and closes up when he feels like it. The sushi and authentic Japanese food far surpass those at trendier sushi joints around town. Cash only.

    Mango Sushi

The nondescript Avonmore Centre hides a couple of recommended eateries near Joop’s Place, including the Mango Sushi.
