    Catz Pyjamas

Eateries in New Melville are generally not as good as those around 7th St - this is where you will find the usual chain eateries - but they are generally easier on the pocket. The Catz Pyjamas can be a little sterile, but it's open 24 hours and the cheap food is welcome after a long night out.

  2. LA Fast Foods

An ideal place to grab a meal if you have to wait a while for your visa from any of the nearby embassies. Allow some time to plough through the confusing array of menus on the counter offering Chinese food, burgers, steaks and a hundred variations of 'chicken and chips'.

  3. B

    Le Poseidon Bar & Restaurant

This is Kigali's very own fast-food spot, with a lively bar and local restaurant offering sandwiches, burgers, pizzas and pastas. It draws a healthy work crowd at lunchtime and can fill up with stragglers leaving the office on Fridays.

  4. C

    Les Grilladins

This is a good address for pizzas and crêpes. Food here isn't fancy but it's reliable, and even served relatively speedily. Les Grilladins also does home delivery.

  5. D

    Brochettes sur la Capital

This Lomé institution is the city at its best - enjoy sitting outside eating lip-smacking kebabs and watching the boulevard hustle by.

  7. F

    Natural Burguer

South of Santa Catalina, this eco-McDonald's burger joint is justifiably popular with budget-seekers and students. Veggie burgers with a choice of toppings are on the menu, as well as the regular beef burgers (although you are penalised with a white bun rather than wholemeal). Extras include watercress salad, corn on the cob and papas del abuelo (thick-cut potato chips). Go all out with a papaya-and-guava juice on the side.

    Gad

Egypt’s answer to (although a vast improvement on) McDonald’s, this chain of absurdly popular takeaway joints has people flocking (think gadflies) day and night. It serves a huge range of filled sandwiches, kebabs, ta’amiyya and mouth-watering shwarma. There’s another branch on Sharia Mohammed Azmy Tossoun.

    Island Dishes

Once your eyes have adjusted to the dazzling strip lights, feast them on the tasty menu at this whiter-than-white Lamu-themed canteen. Mishkaki (kebabs), chicken tikka, fish, fresh juices and all the usual favourites are on offer to eat in or take away, though the biryani (curry and rice) is only available at lunchtime.

    Dhal Puris Stall

Port Louis is a snackers' paradise. The Central Market and bus stations provide happy hunting grounds, but you'll find stalls all over town peddling samosas and gâteaux piments (deep-fried balls of lentils and chilli, sandwiches or more substantial curries. A perennial favourite is the Dhal Puris Stall .

    Fried Fish Stalls

Several cheap hole-in-the-wall places huddle here looking onto the Grand Socco. They're as basic as can be, but serve out generous portions of fried sardines and the like with chips, salad, a hunk of bread and a squeeze of lemon. Quick, filling and exceedingly tasty. Similar stalls sit near the steps at Rue Dar Dbagh

  13. K

    Snack Taouss

Known for its burgers and chips, this little snack bar also does decent, inexpensive pizzas, salads, harira (lentil soup), tajines and more. There’s a small seating area upstairs (handy if you’re waiting for a pizza), or you can eat on the move. If it’s full, there’s a similar place, 10 Mai, next door.

    Le Zoréol

This a fairly typical expat-run bar, with free pool tables, Beaujolais Nouveau and lots of rum, but also offers pizza, pasta and Réunionnaise cuisine (zoréol is a common nickname for French residents of this other Indian Ocean island). On Wednesday and Sunday it's only open in the evening.

  15. M

    Blue Room Restaurant

The Blue Room is hugely popular for its fast food - anything from cakes and sandwiches to curries, steaks and pizzas. Drinks are made with filtered water and there are no fewer than two back-up generators in case of power cuts. There's also a highly recommended ice-cream parlour.

    Sandwiches Big Mac

It's certainly fast food, but there are no Big Macs here! Choose from the display cabinet and watch your sandwich filling being cooked on the griddle. Stuffed baguettes or bread rounds come with chips. There are some chairs and tables, too, for tea or coffee (both around DH4).

  17. O

    Kentucky Restaurant

If you're after just a quick bite, this bright and popular place serves up dinner boxes which include three pieces of 'Kentucky' fried chicken, coleslaw, fries, two buns and a drink. It's great value, although the Colonel (Sanders, not Qaddafi) must be turning in his grave.

    Sandwich Ladies

The stalls in front of Maquis Le Lagon Grill on Blvd Steinmetz are perennial favourites, as are the Sandwich Ladies on the same street as Paradise nightclub. They allow you to create your own rolls with sausages, hot pepper sauce and loads more.

  19. Osiris Park Cafeteria

The food is overpriced and consists mostly of snacks, although chicken meals (E£35) are sometimes available and the welcome is friendly and the drinks cold. There is also a surprisingly good range of books and brochures about the temple.

    La Isla Boccadillos

One of the cheapest places in town to sate your appetite is this snack bar just outside the bus station offering a variety of sandwiches, kofta (mincemeat and spices grilled on a skewer) and salads with rice.

  24. S

    Domino's Pizza

Believe it or not, this isn't actually part of the vast international empire, but a local place that has managed to hang on to the name. Still the pizza is just as good as its internationally famous namesake.

  25. T

    Caesar's

Sometimes only fried chicken wings, burgers and fries will do, and for those moments Caesar's is your place. Come here regularly and you'll gain precious insights into the complexities of teenage love life.

  26. U

    Café Delight

Serves Lebanese and Indian fast food, shawarmas, samosas and curries. The plastic tables overlooking the Total petrol station don't make this the most romantic of settings but the food is mighty tasty.

  27. V

    Steers

On Kampala Rd, Steers is a South African burger joint that does pretty much the same sort of things as chain burger joints the world over. Plus there is a branch of Debonair's in the same complex.
