European restaurants in Africa

  1. Majestic

You’ll need to grab a taxi for this upscale place, although if you make a reservation the restaurant offers a pick-up and drop-off service. The stylish open-plan layout looks to London- and Parisien-style magazines for inspiration and pulls it off, while the menu is distinctly French-leaning, with some Mediterranean influences (the fish is a high point). Service is excellent, and there’s a good wine list that adds to the evening out, but pack your wallet well before dining.

    Khan El Khalili

The funky 1960s Arabesque interior of this hotel restaurant is more impressive than the food. Brass tables, marble floor and floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the Great Pyramid star; the pan-European food (and cold Stella) is more of a supporting act.

  3. Suikerbossie

The garden at this large 1930s house, perched at the top of the hill before you descend to Hout Bay, is a lovely spot for breakfast or afternoon tea. It's often used for functions, so call ahead. The Sunday carvery R120 is very popular.

  4. B

    Café Restaurant la Casa

In Bamako Coura, this is a fine, relaxed backpacker hang-out opposite the Mission Catholique; their spaghetti, couscous and ragout dishes contain the freshest ingredients, but if you want meat you'll need to order in advance.

    La Suite

This is one of Norwood's plusher eateries, with wicker chairs on the pavement and coffee-and-cream décor inside. There's a wide range of local and European dishes on the menu, or you can dig into the lunchtime buffet.

    Le Kasuku

A little garden oasis in the heart of the city, Kasuku has a hearty range of European dishes, including tender steaks with pepper, red-wine or blue-cheese sauce. The pizzas here are also some of the best in the city.

  7. Zen Garden

The Zen Garden is as pleasing as Majestic, and kinder on the bank balance. Deservedly popular, with a good line in continental-style dishes in refined surroundings. Alcohol is served.

  8. Top View

We could talk about the cannelloni, Parma ham and fresh seafood, but we're still thinking of its gorgeous view.
