Source Café
Hit the Source for a fair selection of light bites, salads, brownies and pastries. This is the place for a coffee fix, as it has several speciality varieties.

Gianni Sorvetaria
We think the home-made ice cream at the Hotel Polana Tea Room is the best, but this comes close.

Dar Roumana
The menu here takes cues from the riad’s name – house of pomegranates. Mediterranean with a Moroccan slant, including some interesting seafood dishes such as swordfish with pomegranates. It all works fabulously, and you eat in the courtyard or in fine weather up on the wonderful terrace. Alcohol is served.

La Royaltine
Guarded by a uniformed porter and drenched in soft, golden lighting, Dakar's most polished patisserie oozes class. Affluent Dakarois swagger in here for tasty cakes, desserts and chocolates.

Pâtisserie Driss
For morning croissants or an afternoon pastry the best places to go are Pâtisserie Driss (which has a hidden seating area) and Café Faid, both near Pl Moulay Hassan.

Le Chateau
Popular for serious steaks, Le Chateau is home to the Quality Cuts butchery, guaranteeing top meat. This place is absurdly fashionable among well-to-do Ugandans. The extensive menu favours French cuisine, and includes frogs' legs and snails, so if you are looking to indulge, this is a good place to do it.
Ice cream is very popular in Kampala and there are several parlours spread across the city. The best ice cream in Kampala is found at Le Chateau, but the location is inconvenient for a casual treat.

Patisserie Al-Jawda
Care for a sweet, or perhaps 200 different ones? Hakima Alami can set you up with sweet and savoury delicacies featuring figs, orange-flower water, desert honey and other local, seasonal ingredients. Around the corner at 84 Ave Mohammed V, Hakima's savvy son has set up a tea salon featuring his mother's treats plus additional savoury items such as briouats (stuffed pastry 'cigars') and khlii, the seasoned dried Berber beef that's a very acquired taste.

1000 Cups Coffee House
For a coffee kick from Brazil to Vietnam and everything in between, caffeine cravers should head here. 'A cup for every nation' is its motto and it doesn't neglect the homebrews from Uganda. There is also a menu of light bites, such as salads and sandwiches, and sweet pastries. It's a good place to hang out and catch up with the rest of the world, as there is a large selection of international newspapers and magazines.

Ice Legend
Your saving grace on scorching afternoons: fresh, locally made ice cream in modern facilities. Go with the tantalizing (if alarmingly bright) fruity varieties - the lemon sorbet here is legendary. To compensate for the male dominance of cafés, women have the run of ice-cream parlours in Morocco, so men should be prepared to surrender their seats gallantly or suffer icy stares.

Les Palmiers d’Aziza
With an exterior in bright Marrakesh pink, this popular café offers several options – sit in the sunny garden, hang at the tables near the mouthwatering cookie counter, or head upstairs to the covered terrace away from public view. The latter is a popular choice for boys and girls on dates. The ice cream and smoothies here are excellent.

Le Castel Glacier
We lost all self-control at this talismanic ice-cream parlour a short waddle away from Castel Boulanger (same management). Just thinking of chocolate makes us salivate; you don't want to know what happens when we recall the fèves du Tonka (a variety of cocoa). Also serves up snack options, including salads, at lunchtime.

Pâtisserie Rahmouni
Ask a local where to get the best pastries in Tetouan, and they'll probably send you here. The Rahmouni family has a high reputation for its sticky delights, which have the punters queuing deep at breakfast time. Get a juice or coffee to go with your croissant at the stand-up bar at the back.

Aloha
There is an argument for skipping dessert wherever you lunch or dine and heading straight to this drool-inducing ice-cream parlour instead. Amid a mind-boggling array of flavours, the electric purple pitaya screams 'try me'. Lip-smackingly good pancakes too.

Le Parad'Ice
Some say it serves the best ice cream in Madagascar, with lots of fruit flavours - the passionfruit has been recommended. Just down the road from Air Mad's office, it is also known for great breakfasts and a menu of burgers, grills and sandwiches. There's a bar.

Cafe Kortoba
This café is an institution. When you're tired of all the walking, it's a great (albeit small) place to sit for coffee or mint tea, orange juice, an ice cream or a slice of cake. Bang on the edge of the Kairaouine, there's plenty going on around you.

A true French patisserie serving wonderful cakes, pastries, croissants and creamy ice cream. Locals stop in to pick up crispy loaves of French bread in the morning, and usually end up lingering, chatting with friends over juice and real espresso.

Mandarine Koueider
For a sweet treat, Mandarine Koueider is the place to get your fix of delectable ice cream. Definitely shell out extra for the zabadi bi-tut (yoghurt with blackberry). There’s another branch in Heliopolis.

Blue Babel
The vibe here is similar to that of Assouan, but the location isn't quite as good and the clientele is a bit younger due to the fact that ice cream and pizza join coffee and cake on the menu. The prices are the same as at Assouan.

A long-running Italian restaurant. The small pizzas are just about enough for a meal. There is also a genuine gelato bar here for ice-cream lovers. The gelato bar has some deliciously rich flavours from amaretto to zabaglione.

Popular with the young and trendy, this place has a good selection of pastries. The downstairs can be a little smoky, in which case you can retreat to the salon upstairs.
