Deli restaurants in Africa

  1. A

    Luisun Supermarket

This Italian delicatessen is stuffed to the ceiling with cheeses, salamis, and home-made cakes and biscuits. It also has a range of wines and some little luxuries, like stuffed olives. It now operates a small deli-café in the middle of the shop, including full meals like lasagne and grilled chicken, as well as the obvious antipasto treats.

  2. Oasis Bistro

This excellent bistro does imaginative breakfasts, lunches and dinners, including a variety of salads, crepes, gyros, steaks and seafood specials. Try the savoury bacon, mushroom, tomato and cream cheese flapjack, or the honey, berry, nut and ice-cream variety.

  3. Ocean Vagabond

Although a good walk from town, this simple little café is the best of the beachfront offerings. It serves a decent but limited range of sandwiches, pizza, pasta and salads and has plenty of comfy seats in the sand from where the kids can run free.

  4. Noordhoek Village Farmstall

There are several places to eat at this faux-village complex, but the best is the farm stall. It does great sandwiches, salads made from its organic vegetables, and baked goods. Take a seat under the shady oaks outside or in the coffee shop inside.

  5. B

    Wild Things

Specialising in game meats, this deli-café prepares its own biltong (dried meat), bakes its own pies and offers a range of tempting preserves. Try the traditional venison bobotie with rice (around R28) or venison sandwich (R24.50).

  6. Snack Sandwich Dahlia

The tiny square near Hotel Andaluz is a delightful spot for a quick lunch, and this snack bar fits the bill. Dahlia will prepare you a hamburger or omelette with salad and warm bread to munch under the shady vines.

  7. C

    New York Bagels

At this Sea Point institution you can browse the well-stocked deli or tempting food court. Put together a mix 'n' match meal of, say, a hot-beef-on-rye sandwich followed by freshly made waffles and fruit salad.

    Snack Yousfi

Fill up on a sandwich here for lunch and you might not be hungry again until breakfast. Baguettes are stuffed to overflowing with various fillings, topped out with salad and a handful of chips. Great value.
