Chinese restaurants in Africa

  1. Flamingo

Like the famous Fang Fang in Kampala, the Flamingo has moved into an anonymous office block in Kacyiru, but it doesn't seem to be affecting its pulling power. The sizzling platters are quite a sight, plus there is a serious selection for vegetarians, not often the case in Kigali. That said, someone should probably tell them that bean curd with beef doesn't count!

    Fang Fang

Chinese restaurants are surprisingly prolific in Kampala, but some are better than others. The consensus in the city is that this is the best Chinese restaurant and the sheer numbers that pack the place each night attest to the quality of the food. Located in an anonymous office block, the interior is typical of a Chinese restaurant anywhere, but there is a large outdoor terrace for breezy nights.

There's a full selection of Chinese classics, and specialities include fried crispy prawns with ginger and garlic.

    Ling Ling

Formerly Fang Fang, this place has one of the weirdest locations for any Chinese restaurant - in the forecourt of a petrol station - but don't let that distract from the food. The best Chinese beyond Kampala, tuck into a good spread with drinks for around USh15,000.

  4. C

    Bangkok Chinese Restaurant

The Bangkok has been in business for a number of years but was clearly named by someone with no grasp of geography, as there's virtually nothing Thai on the menu at all. If the disappointment gets too much you can always crack open a bottle of Moët.

  5. D

    China Town

This surprisingly unkitsch, air-conditioned Chinese restaurant, with a well-stocked bar, is at the southwest end of the boulevard.

  6. E

    Alcove

Dark, heavy décor and tasty Indian and Chinese cuisine, including vegetarian dishes.

  7. F

    Restaurant de Chine

If you believe expats and wealthy locals (and there's no reason not to) this is Ouaga's best Chinese restaurant. After spending time in Ouaga's markets you'll wonder where they get the fine cuts of meat and the freshest of ingredients. Not surprisingly, it's a popular place, especially on weekends when the extensive and varied menu and the attentive service draw the crowds.

  8. G

    Memnon

Excellent, laid-back restaurant with simple but very well-prepared Egyptian fare, and if you want a change from that, there are some equally good Indian and Chinese dishes on the menu. Afterwards hang out and stare eternity in the face looking at the Colossi, while smoking a sheesha. Leave some space for the homemade mango sorbet, it’s worth it.

  9. H

    China House

Atop the Cecil Hotel, this highly recommended restaurant serves scrumptious Asian food beneath a tent with dangling lanterns and stunning views over the harbour. The ambience is breezy, the chicken dumplings and grilled beef with garlic first-rate, and the banana fritters unmissable. Beer and Egyptian wine are served.

  10. I

    Splendid View Restaurant

You'll be looking in vain if you expect magnificent vistas from the street seating here - the name merely refers to the Splendid Hotel opposite. Luckily the food compensates for this sly misnomer, covering styles from tandoori to Chinese-influenced pili pili, a kind of curry.

    La Vieille Rouge

The red snapper isn't exactly a find, but it's one of Grand Baie's more reliable budget eateries. You'll find a standard selection of Creole curries, Chinese dishes, fresh fish and so forth. It's all tasty and comes in decent portions, although the set menu seems a little steep.

  13. Le Croustillant

The service can be very slow, but it's worth the wait - our stir-fried seafood noodles were about as fresh as you can get. The small and unpretentious restaurant has a large menu that includes everything from omelettes to pasta. The Chinese dishes are particularly good.

    Green Bamboo Garden

This place, opposite the Lilongwe Hotel, serves great, fresh Chinese food (the stewed fish head in brown sauce is actually quite tasty); and for those of you who wish to exorcise your inner diva, there are three private rooms that have karaoke thrown in for free.

    Han Kang

Although you’re a long way from the Far East, this surprisingly good Chinese restaurant hits the spot, especially if you’ve been on the road for a while and can’t bear to look at another felafel sandwich.

    Hesheng

Sea Point is stacked with Chinese restaurants, but this inauspicious-looking hole in the wall is the real deal, run by a friendly Chinese couple and frequented by Chinese expats. They make their dumplings and noodles by hand.

  17. N

    Oriental Restaurant

The dishes read like your Chinese favourites, they almost look like your Thai favourites, but sadly none of them taste like your tongue's favourites. On the bright side, it still gives your palate some needed diversity.

  18. O

    Le Pagode

If you’re tired of tajines and pasta, this realistic bit of Asia is the answer. An intimate and classy dining area, with lacquered furniture, white tablecloths and low lighting is mated with a classic Chinese menu.

  19. P

    Gran Muralla

If you’ve had enough local food, you’ll find hearty portions of Chinese standards here. Window tables have views over the plaza and out to sea. Be careful during off-hours, as yesterday’s rice will be waiting.

  20. Q

    Hong Kong Restaurant

Housed in a grand pagoda-style building that belies the rather mediocre food. For a Chinese restaurant the menu is surprisingly limited and the food, although it arrives in large portions, is nothing special.

  21. R

    Taaj Indian Restaurant

The Taaj's extensive Indian and Chinese menu includes chicken, mutton, seafood and rice plates, plus vegetarian specialities, fruit shakes and mango lassis, and a Sunday buffet.

  23. S

    Chin Chin

This Chinese stalwart is a great place to bring the family. The friendly and efficient waiters serve up good-quality basics such as spring rolls, stir fries and egg noodles.

  24. T

    China Jiangsu Restaurant

A stylish rooftop restaurant above the Soin shopping centre. Prices are very reasonable considering the classy balcony setting, and the food's not to be sniffed at either.

  25. U

    Sichuan

The best Chinese restaurant in Lusaka, which is bizarrely situated in a warehouse at the Showgrounds. However, the prices are reasonable and the ambience relaxing.

  26. V

    Chopsticks Restaurant

Looking like the remains of a restaurant, Chopsticks is only a few outdoor tables with plastic chairs serving standard Chinese dishes and delicious large pizzas.

  27. W

    Hong Kong Restaurant

A bright-red restaurant with good food and not too much clichéd décor. It's the cheapest proper Chinese in town and is accordingly popular.
