  1. A

    El-Abd Bakery

For pastries head for Cairo’s most famous bakery, easily identified by the crowds of people outside tearing into their sweets and savoury pies. There’s another branch on the corner of Sharia 26th of July and Sharia Sherif.

  2. B

    Kigoma Bakery

For self-catering, there are several well-stocked shops near the market, including Kigoma Bakery. Also sells fresh juices and ice cream; diagonally opposite Ally’s Restaurant.

  3. C

    Sweet Asmara Caffe

This sleek pastry shop is a treasure-trove for the sweet tooth, with a tempting array of diet-busting little treats.

  4. D

    De La Creme

The counter at the front hides some of the best bread and cakes in Jo’burg, but this is also a restaurant serving breakfasts, sandwiches and burgers as well as heavier main meals such as bobotie (delicately flavoured curry with a topping of beaten egg baked to a crust) and grills. There are large windows on all sides from where you can watch the street, and magazines for browsing. It gets very busy at weekday lunchtimes.

  5. Pâtisserie Adamo

Chocolate éclairs with élan and light custard pastries studded with berries: is that rumbling your stomach, or the sound of Parisian patisseries' thunder being stolen by this Marrakshi success? Thank the seven saints of Marrakesh that chef Bruno Maulion saw fit to leave his Paris patisserie business, relocate to Marrakesh and raise the Marrakshi bar for croissants to the heavens.

    Segni

Kairouan is famous for a date-filled semolina cake soaked in honey called makhroud, which can be found everywhere. Expect to pay 150 mills a piece. Segni is the best place to sample makhroud and other local specialties. Signed only in Arabic in the middle of the medina, Segni's interior is a wonderful example of a traditional medina shop.

  7. Patisserie Asco

The friendly Patisserie Asco does a range of pastries, the croissants are dense and stodgy, but their local specialties (Tuareg, Songhaï and Arab) are excellent. The riz alabadja (rice, cow butter, meat and lemon) is a highlight. The only drawback are the hangers-on who seem to appear whenever tourists do.

  8. F

    La Sorbetière

This fine pâtisserie may lure you in with promises of ice cream, but there's rarely any available. There is, however, a spick-and-span dining room where they serve up excellent pastries (the croissants are good for breakfast) or reasonable sandwiches, pizza slices and hamburgers.

  9. G

    Café Pâtisserie SMIR

On a corner in the heart of the pedestrian way, SMIR is a popular place for a coffee or pastry. There are two options: the tables strung along the pavement to watch the world go by, or the quiet seating area upstairs, which is notable for the groups of women it often attracts.

    Kapa

Another colossus on the café scene, this little bakery turns out pastries, sandwiches and some of the best coffee in town. Again it is popular in the morning and afternoons, but closed for lunch. Alright, siestas and all that, but one of the bakeries is missing a market.

    La Gourmandise

One of the city's most popular French patisseries, this ground-floor café in one of the city's glitziest malls comes complete with tuxedoed waiters, a profusion of potted palms and a grand piano. It serves good-quality Mediterranean dishes that are perfect for lunch.

  13. J

    Pâtisserie Lina

Mountainous cakes in elaborate guises adorn the window displays at this traditional French patisserie. Come for breakfast and you may find yourself returning for an afternoon sugar fix just so you can try some more of the tantalising gateaux on display.

  14. Patisserie Rabaoui Kairouan

Places to try Kairouan's famed date-filled semolina cake soaked in honey (called makhroud) include the outdoor stalls just off the main thoroughfare near the arch, or the brightly lit and modern Patisserie Rabaoui Kairouan.

  15. K

    Vasili's Bakery

This is a bakery to remember, serving perhaps the best range of pies and cakes in the city, a top spot for breakfast or afternoon tea. Chelsea buns, apple crumble and other old-world favourites are plentiful here.

    Vinous

Vinous is an old-school patisserie with more grand art deco styling than you can poke a puff pastry at, but secretly we love it for the period scales labelled with the ‘Just’ brand.

  17. M

    Pâtisserie de l'Opéra

Drop in for breakfast and try getting by the counter at this bakery/café without giving in to one of the incredible cakes. It's a wonderfully relaxed place with a hidden seating area out the back.

  18. Patisserie Le Taubon

A good range of snacks and lights meals are available here, including meat pockets, chicken burgers and nêmes (shredded beef in an egg roll). It's on the road to the airport.

  19. N

    Calafatas

People cross the city to get their pastries from Calafatas, and you should too. Although it's open all day, all the best choices are gone by late morning, leaving little but baguettes.

  20. O

    Café Faid

For morning croissants or an afternoon pastry the best places to go are Pâtisserie Driss (which has a hidden seating area) and Café Faid, both near Pl Moulay Hassan.

This air-conditioned patisserie and restaurant, on the 1st floor of the Immeuble Taba, behind Hôtel Palm Beach, is popular with the Lebanese community.

  27. U

    Pâtisserie le Royaume des Gourmands

This air-con haven amid busy Bamako is the best patisserie in town, with good croissants, coffee and fresh orange juice served with a smile.
