Rhodes House
Not quite as hot as it once was, this luxurious venue spread over a grand old house can still provide a good dance night out. Thursday is R&B night so you can shimmy and pout with the glam set. The long queues and cooler-than-thou attitude can be a pain however.

Fermento Piano Bar
'For those of the night' - Fermento has the town's hippest dance floor, apparently once frequented by Naomi Campbell. It's young, trendy and Italian, so wear your showiest outfit. Morgan's Bar, part of Fermento, is a ritzy cocktail joint with a very well-tended bar.

La Veronica
The sort of place you would go to before swishing off for a night at the opera. It's sophisticated and stylish, with natural stone, arty giant photos and an interesting, iridescent emerald-green light behind the bar, which sounds awful but somehow works.

Macabeo
This place oozes atmosphere and style with its cavernous interior decorated with intriguing childlike drawings and shelves of dusty bottles. A second, smaller bar with dim lighting and stone walls is perfect for locked-eyes-over-cocktails time.

Le Tabasco
Perennially chic, Le Tabasco is a basement grotto with good electronica and moody lighting – most of the well-dressed, slightly older patrons are here to air-kiss and nibble on assorted international snacks. Reservations are a good idea.

Eden du Lac
A little way north of the Cercle Nautique, this garden bar is a local institution and is namechecked by most young Burundians when you ask them where to go. Drinking with a view and discerning dining.

Zeta Bar
Voluptuous red-plush seats and curvy soft lines provide the backdrop for this lounge lizard's favourite. Sip your cocktail and watch the beautiful people - or just have a cold beer on the terrace.
