Heaven
The Yumbo Centrum transforms into a pulsating clubbers' heaven at night - and the aptly named Heaven (an offshoot of the London club) is the flashiest and best of the gay discos here. There are straight and gay places in the centre and you could stagger around Yumbo Centrum - as many do - for weeks and not sample all the nightlife options.

Sliver
A gay and gay-friendly crowd fill this spacious, fun venue with a fairy-light-festooned courtyard and rooftop chill-out areas. Upstairs thudding-hard house and bare chests are the go, while downstairs, house and anthems keep the dance floor crowded.

Scotts Nightclub
Tangier was hugely popular with British homosexuals before legalisation in 1967, but today's gay scene is a mere shadow. Scotts Nightclub is one of the few places retaining a gay reputation, along with the Tanger Inn on weekends. Get to both late in the hour.

Cruz
They may tell you that it's the glitzy décor and handsome clientele that make this the hot gay bar of the moment, but we know that the real draw is its troupe of brief-clad go-go boys shaking their stuff on the podiums. How else could you endure dancing to a disco version of the theme from The Love Boat?

Vip
Head through the '80s fuchsia neon entryway, and you'll find two venues for the price of one: a disco that gets the party started with high-energy techno, and a cabaret where musicians pound out raucous Rai-Gnaoua-Chaabi fusion. The crowd is gay-friendly and fashion conscious, though some bar lurkers are working more than a look.

Bent
Durban is a bit short on gay and lesbian venues. However, new on the scene is Bent, which organises monthly parties (not on set nights) at roaming, classy venues in Durb's 'burbs. Parties range from between 200 to 600 patrons - both guys and gals - although they're more popular among the 'wymyn' (their spelling, not ours). International guests are welcome.
