Cocktail Lounge entertainment in Africa

  1. A

    Ratz Bar

This dark, cubby-like bar has rats daubed on the walls rather than running across the floors. Try one of its tasty and well-priced cocktails (R25).

  2. B

    Capella

From the same stable as the equally lavish Cruz and Opium comes this Afro-chic venue with ostrich-egg chandeliers, zebra-hide upholstery and an intricately carved Indian doorway. Avoid the so-so food and head to the bar for the excellent cocktails.

    Latitude 20

Despite being a hotel bar this is probably still Port Louis' best spot for a cocktail. The nautical theme may not scream good taste, but the drinks are very well made and there's usually a pianist doing his thing in the corner.

  4. D

    Revolving Restaurant Lounge

Cheesy, yes, but there's a lot to be said for comfortable seats and knock-out views from the tallest structure for miles around. There's a pianist and you'll need to frock up. (The adjacent restaurant doesn't merit the money.)

    Billy the Bum’s

Attracting a crowd of Durban’s upwardly mobile (even the sign above the bar says ‘elegantly wasted’), this suburban cocktail bar is reliably raucous.

  6. F

    Zara

Ease into low gear by sinking a cocktail at this genteel lounge bar. It stays open until midnight, and is a good place to warm up before hitting the clubs.

Ease into your evening with a cocktail at the nearby Hard Rock Café with its standard red Cadillac, elegant terrace and fancy cocktails.

A recommended cocktail bar and seafood restaurant southeast of the centre.
