  4. IntoAfrica

A small operator specialising in fair-traded cultural safaris and treks in northern Tanzania. It directly supports local communities in the areas where it works, consistently garners positive reviews from travellers and is an ideal choice if your interest is more in gaining insight into local life and culture, than in experiencing the luxury lodge atmosphere. One of its most popular itineraries is a seven-day wildlife-cultural safari in Maasai areas.

  5. Satimbé Travel

Boat trips from Mopti on the Niger and/or Bani Rivers are one of the highlights of any trip to Mali, but they're also among the most daunting to organise. Satimbé Travel, an excellent company run by Issa Ballo, has been recommended as a pleasant and reliable local operator to deal with and most guides can make the arrangements on your behalf. Remember that longer boat trips are only possible from July or August to December when water levels are high.

    Abseil Africa

The 112m drop off the top of Table Mountain is a guaranteed adrenaline rush, and the cheapest place to book it is direct with the operator, whose office is just off Long St. Don’t even think of tackling it unless you’ve got a head (and a stomach) for heights. Take your time, because the views are breathtaking. Tag on a guided hike up Platteklip Gorge for R195. The kloofing trips to gorges around Gordon’s Bay involve jumps varying between 3m and 22m.

  9. Servicio de Uso Público

The key to climbing the summit from the top of the cable car is to plan ahead. There's a permit scheme in force that restricts the number of visitors who can climb to the summit to 150 a day. Until recently, anyone who intended to make this climb had to go in person to the national park office in Santa Cruz. Now, if you plan ahead by at least one week you can reserve your place by contacting the Servicio de Uso Público either by fax or email.

    Neptuno

Companies offering two-, three- and five-hour boat cruises to check out whales and dolphins are set up at the end of Playa de Los Cristianos, near the port, and in Puerto Colón in Costa Adeje. Most trips include food, drink and a quick swim. Though all are basically the same, we recommend the smaller Playa de Los Cristianos-based companies. Neptuno offers personal service, small boats, and lower prices than many other outfits in the area.

    Neptune Diving

The local diving industry has emphatically moved down the coast to less built-up Mont Choisy and Trou aux Biches, but a number of operators still maintain a base in Grand Baie. Eritrea Diving Center

If you want to learn to dive, you can contact the Eritrea Diving Center on Taulud Island. Ask for the helpful English-speaking Nasreddin Osman, who can organise the usual Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI) courses. Open-water courses (US$360) can usually be completed in four days. For those who just want a taste of Eritrea's underwater world, there's a 'Scuba Diving Introduction' for US$50, which runs over a half day.

  18. Taghaghien Touristic Island

If you’re desperate for a beer, this small island 12km northwest of Siwa Town and connected by a causeway is one of the few places selling the amber nectar (for a whopping E£35 a bottle). There is some humble accommodation and a restaurant here, but its many shaded tables and chairs, paddle-boat rentals and sweet sunset vistas make it better suited for a day trip or picnic. You’ll need your own transport to get here.

    Royal Tennis Club

King Hassan II loved his tennis, as witnessed by numerous portraits of the guy in all-white togs at this historic 1926 tennis venue complete with clubhouse and pool. Perfect your own royal backhand with helpful instructors on one of seven clay courts (or more, depending on your aim), including the centre court named after Moroccan tennis legend Younes el Ayanaoui. Mornings and evenings are usually best; four courts are lit at night.

    Long St Baths

Dating from 1906, these nicely restored baths, featuring painted murals of city-centre life on the walls, are heated and very popular with the local community. The separate Turkish steam baths (R70) are a great way to sweat away some time, especially during the cooler months. Women are admitted 8.30am to 7pm Monday and Thursday, and 9am to 6pm Saturday; men 1pm to 7pm Tuesday, 9am to 7pm Wednesday and Friday, and 8am to noon Sunday.

  23. Water Sports

If you are into water sports, pedalos, kayaks and jet skis can be rented at the northern end of Masbat and at the holiday villages on the lagoon. Although the golden hills of Saudi Arabia in the distance seem to make for an excellent destination, trust us - you don't want to try to cross. At least one Japanese backpacker we know of managed to touch Saudi soil, only to be rounded up and arrested by some rather unhappy border guards.

As at the main estate out at Robertson, the buildings here are all strikingly modern with some contemporary sculptures to match. Its eminently drinkable products include fizzies that give French champagnes a run for their money, and the Rhona Muscadel that’s heaven in a glass. Watch the bottling process in action from the tasting room and look out for the beautiful Ndebele beaded wall panel created by artist Tamar Mason.
