Who we are?

We believe travel can bring people together and promote awareness and respect. As part of the worldwide community of travellers, we see travel as a powerful means of inspiring not only adventure and fun but also tolerance and understanding.

Whilst we now accept advertising this does not alter our commitment to giving you lots of interesting and useful information and advice about travel - it's what we love doing. And of course hearing from you, on your experiences as you travel the world.

The company began in the early 1970s when founders Tony and Maureen Wheeler completed an overland journey from London through Asia to Australia. That trip resulted in the first ever Lonely Planet guidebook - Across Asia on the Cheap - and laid the foundations of the world's leading independent travel publisher.

We do not, and never will, accept payment in exchange for an opinion, review, recommendation or endorsement and we will not provide favourable treatment to organisations who advertise on the site.

Lonely Planet travellers are intrepid, independent and socially aware. They are educated and economically equipped to make independent travel choices.

Lonelyplanet.com

Lonely Planet is the number one information website for travellers in the world. Our site contains over 20,000 pages of detailed, on-the-spot information, reviewed by an ongoing army of dedicated authors on the road. We consider ourselves innovative within the travel guide field, expanding our database across the web into mobile and portable access technologies, attracting a wide range of travellers with one thing in common, a desire to explore the world around them in a passionate yet respectful way.
