Wildlife Reserve Activities

  1. Kaki Visitor Hide

The rare kaki (black stilt bird) is found only in NZ, and a breeding program is aiming to increase the population at the Ahuriri Conservation Park. Just south of Twizel, the Kaki Visitor Hide gives you a close-up look at these elusive birds. Bookings are essential for the one-hour tour. Book at the Twizel i-SITE (you’ll need your own transport).

  2. Selwo Aventura

This popular safari park has over 200 exotic animal species. You can tour the park by 4WD or on foot and enjoy various adventure activities. It is home to the only Asian elephant born in Spain and there is even a lodge if you fancy an overnight stay in – erm – Africa.

  3. Aiko-logi

Nestled into the Cordillera de Talamanca, 2km outside the village (just beyond the Volio waterfall), is a private 135-hectare reserve centered around the site of what was once a small finca, on a piece of land fringed with dense primary rainforest. It’s an ideal spot for bird-watching, hiking and splashing around in crisp, clean swimming holes. Day tours from Puerto Viejo and Cahuita can be arranged, as can overnight stays at Aiko-logi’s tent platform. Reserve ahead.

  4. Rancho La Merced National Wildlife Refuge

A few kilometers before Uvita, opposite the turnoff to Oro Verde, is this 506-hectare national wildlife refuge (and former cattle ranch) with primary and secondary forests and mangroves lining the Río Morete. Here you can take guided nature hikes, horseback-riding tours to Punta Uvita and bird-watching walks. You can also stay at La Merced in a 1940s farmhouse, which can accommodate up to 10 people in double rooms of various sizes. Tour prices vary.
