Walking Tours Activities

  1. A

    Wither Hills Farm Park

In a town as flat as a pancake, this 1100-hectare park provides welcome relief, offering a range of walks and mountainbike trails with grand views across the Wairau Valley and out to Cloudy Bay. Pick up a map from the i-SITE or check the information panels at the gates.

  2. Walk to Ushguli

You can spend a lovely three days walking to Ushguli if you start by taking a jeep as far as Ipari (Nakipari on some maps), about 20km southeast of Mestia. From Ipari the first stage takes you to Adishi, where you can sleep at Zhora Kaldani's homestay. The second day is from Adishi to Iprari, where there are rooms at Ucha Margvelani's.

On the third day it's three or four hours' walk from Iprari to Ushguli.

  3. Guided Walks

Park rangers host Guided Walks up the mountain in both Spanish and English. The pace is gentle and there are frequent information pauses. Even though you'll huff and puff rather more than usual because of the high altitude, the walks are suitable for anyone of reasonable fitness (including children aged over 10). Walks last about two hours. Groups are small, so it is essential to call ahead and reserve a spot.

  6. Fairy Spring

The Fairy Spring is really a stream that flows through a patch of dunes with interesting sand and rock formations. It's a beautiful trek wading up the stream from the sea to its source, though it might be wise to hire a local guide. You can do the trek barefoot, but if you're heading out into the big sand dunes, you'll need leather soles on your feet; sandals are even questionable during the midday sun.

  9. Walking

A short walk from Cachi's plaza brings you to its picturesque hilltop cemetery; nearby is a rather unlikely airstrip. A longer walk takes you along the dirt road to Cachi Adentro, a tiny village where there's not a great deal to do save swing on the seats in the demi-plaza or sip a soda from the only store. It's a particularly lovely walk in summer, when the streams and cascades are alive with water.

  14. Hiking

In summer (about mid-June to mid-September) the Khibiny mountains provide the best hiking in northwestern Russia, in an expanse of flat-topped mountains divided by deep valleys, swift rivers and lakes. The highest point, Yudychvumchorr, rises 1200m above sea level. Don't treat these hills lightly: avalanches happen and the weather can be extreme, even in summer, so don't wander off without a guide.

  15. Totem Trekking

To undertake the climb up the volcano you will need proper walking shoes and clothing for cold wet weather, a change of T-shirt, a torch and a good supply of water and some food. Worry not if you haven't got any of those and still want to climb. Totem Trekking hires out all the necessary equipment (which is well maintained), and thanks to the limited climbing numbers, there's plenty to go around.

From Arkwasiye to Adi Arkay will take another two to three days of strenuous walking, via Sona (three hours from Arkwasiye).

    Mine Workings Walk

The easiest and most popular walk is the gentle hike along the northern shore of the Upper Lake to the lead and zinc Mine Workings Walk, which date from 1800. The better route is along the lakeshore rather than on the road (which runs 30m in from the shore), a distance of about 2.5km, one way, from the Glendalough Visitor Centre. Continue on up the head of the valley if you wish.

  26. Walking

There are well-worn walking paths to the scenic village of Sellia, the Moni Finika, Lefkogia, and a lovely walk along the spectacular Kourtaliotis Gorge to Moni Preveli. An easy 30-minute uphill path to Myrthios begins just before the youth hostel. For guided walking tours, including a walk to Preveli beach that gets you back by boat (around €30), contact Anso Travel.
