  1. Jizo-yu

Spacious main inside tub but no rotemburo. Good if others are crowded.

In addition to the town's great onsen, visitors might want to have a peek at the Kinosaki Mugiwarazaikudenshokan, which has displays on one of the local handicrafts known as mugiwarazaiku, a decorative technique that employs barley straw cut into tiny pieces and applied to wood to form incredibly beautiful patterns. It's located off the canal, a short walk from Ichi-no-yu onsen.

  2. Iriomote Onsen

Part of the Painu Maya Resort hotel, on the east coast of the island, Iriomote Onsen has indoor and outdoor baths. The grounds are attractively landscaped, and there are soothing views of the nearby forest. The onsen-hotel is easy to miss; it's off the main road about 20km north of Ōhara.

  3. Ichi-no-yu

    Wonderful 'cave' bath.

  4. Bokuden-no-yu

The area's most unusual onsen – a tiny cave bath dripping with minerals. It's at the intersection at Naka-no-yu, just before the bus-only tunnel towards Kamikōchi proper. Enter the small shop next to the Naka-no-yu bus stop, pay and get the key to the little mountain hut housing the onsen. It is yours privately for up to 30 minutes.

  5. Takaragawa Onsen

Complete with river bathing, Takaragawa Onsen has oft been voted the nation’s best. To get there, take the Jōetsu Line from Takasaki to Minakami Station ( tokkyū/futsū ¥2360/950, 54/64 minutes), where you will be able to catch a local bus to the onsen (¥1100, 35 minutes).
