Mountain Hike Activities

  1. Nenggaoshan North Peak & Chilai South Peak

Also called the Nenggao West section, this trail starts at Tunyuan (屯原; elevation 2041m) at the end of Hwy 14 and ends the first day at Tienchi (天池; elevation 2860m), with the average hiker taking about five or six hours to walk in. Tienchi has a cabin where you'll find beds, a kitchen and water. You can also camp.

The next day Nenggaoshan North Peak (能高北峰; elevation 3184m) and Chilai South Peak (奇萊主山南峰; elevation 3358m) can be climbed in one long day with a return to Tienchi cabin.

The return to Tunyuan takes three hours.

  2. Nenggao–Andongjun

An epic six-day hike across the spine of Taiwan, the Nenggao–Andongjun (能高-安東軍; Nénggāo–Āndōngjūn) hike is for the very fit and experienced only. The first day's hike follows the same route as the others to Tienchi but after that veers south to cross a rugged high-mountain landscape of deep-set lakes, rolling meadows of dwarf bamboo, deep-cut valleys and endless dark ranges. There is great beauty here and deeper solitude. The last day's hike down the Aowanda River ends in the Aowanda National Forest Recreation Area.

Be prepared to carry your own supplies, including a tent, for the whole trip. A guide who knows the route is an absolute necessity.
