Market Activities

  1. A

    Anjuna Flea Market

Without doubt the most important date in the Anjuna diary, market day sees scores of local and expat vendors descending on the market site at the far south of the beach, to haggle the day away over clothing, jewellery, souvenirs and a good deal, these days, of usual tourist tat. Pick through the rubbish (underfoot, quite literally) to seek out treasure, including sparkling ceiling hangings, dancing dolls, and posh frocks made from dazzling saris. Even if you don’t come home loaded with shopping, it’s an unmissable event, where you’ll find Goa’s old faithful hippies mingling with I Heart Goa–clad Indian tourists, package-holiday Brits and Russians, and young backpackers in…

    Feria San Pedro Telmo

On Sundays, San Telmo’s main drag is closed to traffic and the street is a sea of local families and tourists browsing craft stalls, waiting at vendor’s carts for freshly squeezed orange juice, poking through the antique glass ornaments on display on Plaza Dorrego, and listening to street performances by tango orchestras.

Feria de Artesanos de Plaza Francia

On sunny weekend afternoons, this upscale craft market teems with artisans selling exquisite bronze jewelry, brightly colored cotton sundresses and hand-woven clutch purses. The sprawling display enlivens the green slope of Plaza Francia.

  4. Royal Easter Show

Ostensibly a kiddie-centric agricultural show, this wonderful Sydney tradition is a two-week fiesta of carnival rides, showbags and sugary horrors. Crowds are massive.

    Mercado de San Telmo

Occupying an entire city block, this market was built in 1897 by Juan Antonio Buschiazzo, the same Italian-born Argentine architect who designed the Recoleta Cemetery. The wrought-iron interior and glass skylights make it one of BA’s most atmospheric markets; it’s also where locals shop for fresh produce, cheese and meat. Look for secondhand leather luggage, delicate wine decanters and Jackie O–style sunglasses at the peripheral antique stalls.
