Farm Activities

  1. Pedro Tea Estate

To see where your morning cuppa originates, head to the Pedro Tea Estate, about 3.5km east of Nuwara Eliya on the way to Kandapola. Guided tours of the factory, originally built in 1885 and still packed with 19th-century engineering, run for a half-hour. Overlooking the plantations there’s a pleasant tea house. A three-wheeler from Nuwara Eliya should cost Rs 700 to 800 return, including waiting time. The Single Tree Hotel runs trips for Rs 500 per person. Alternatively you could hop on a Ragalla-bound bus (bus 743) from the main bus station in Nuwara Eliya.

    Collingwood Children’s Farm

The Collingwood Children’s Farm is a bucolic spot right by the Yarra River, with grazing goats, cows, lambs and ponies, all of which tolerate tiny petting hands. The farm also runs a Farmers’ Market, where you can stock up on local organic produce.

  3. Ostrich Farm

About 5km southwest of Villa de Leyva, in the direction of El Fósil, is this slightly incongruous Ostrich Farm, home to more than 120 ostriches and a handful of llamas, horses and sheep. There’s a small shop that sells ostrich leather shoes and enormous ostrich eggs. There’s also a restaurant where you can sample ostrich meat, but it’s only open on weekends.

Fun, down-to-earth farmy folk offer horse treks. Hilarious gravity-fuelled mountain kart luge, woolshed archery and farm-animal feeding are also available. The ranch is 9km west of town at the foot of Mt Fyffe.

  5. Red Stag Deer & Emu Farm

Between Myrtleford and Bright, stop at the Red Stag Deer & Emu Farm. You may get to bottle-feed a baby deer, or be fed yourself – the lunches are delicious and the views amazing.

  6. Domaine de Manon

Curious noses can combine a perfumery session with a (literal) field trip to this wonderful flower farm. Centifolia rose and jasmine have been cultivated here for three generations and Carole Biancalana, the current producer, will take you on a tour of her fields and explain how the flowers are grown and processed. The Domaine's production is sold exclusively to haute-couture label Dior.

Tours only take place during flowering and are held on Tuesday at 10am between May and mid-June for rose, and on Tuesday at 9am between August and mid-October for jasmine; ring ahead to double-check since exact times vary from year to year, depending on flowering.

  7. Wai Ariki Farm Park

With more animals than Dr Dolittle's Facebook page, Wai Ariki is a great spot for kids. Lllamas, Tibetan yaks, rabbits, guinea pigs and goats all feature, and many of the critters can be hand-fed; horse treks for the young ones are also available. For mum and dad there's a cafe and craft gallery.
