Cable Car
The Cable Car provides the easiest, most popular and most expensive way to get up to the peak of El Teide. If you don't mind paying up, the views are great - unless a big cloud is covering the peak, in which case you won't see a thing. On clear days, the volcanic valley spreads out majestically below, and you can see the islands of La Gomera, La Palma and El Hierro peeking up from the Atlantic. It takes just eight minutes to zip up 1200m.
A few words of warning: those with heart or lung problems should stay on the ground, as oxygen is short up here in the clouds. It's chilly, too, so no matter what the weather's like below, bring a jacket. The cable cars, which each hold…

Pfänder Cable Car
The Pfänder rises sharply above Bregenz and affords a breathtaking panorama of the lake and the pointy peaks of the Alps. The cable car will whiz you to the top. At the summit, kids and fans of furry critters will love the Wildpark, a 30-minute circular trail bringing you close to deer, ibex and marmots in their near-to-natural habitat. There's also a Greifvogelflugschau (bird of prey show), where feathered performers amaze with aerial feats (11:00 & 14:30 May-Sep).

Turtle Airways
Flights over the Nausori Highlands and the patchwork farmland of the Sigatoka Valley are also spectacular. The views from flights are especially beautiful on a sunny day. Everything is pretty close on the islands, it takes only 10 minutes to fly from Nadi to the Mamanucas. The islands, coral reefs and depths of blues and greens are gorgeous when seen from above - snorkellers and divers will drool at the sight.

Bungee Jumping
Nile High Bungee is Uganda's only bungee jump, a 44m plunge into the Nile River. Set close to the riverbank, it looks scary from above but is very safe. Look at the arrow on the roof and pull out your finest swan dive. Contact the Adventure Centre, ( www.surfthesource.com; Kira Rd, Kampala)for bookings and information, or drop in on the Nile High Camp, Adrift's base near the Jinja Nile Resort.

Stella Maris Carmelite Monastery Cable Car
The cable car runs up to the monastery from Bat Galim Promenade below, not far from Elijah's Cave and the nearby museums. While the views from the cabins aren't as good as those from the observation point on Stella Maris Rd up at the top, on a hot day you'd certainly want to skip climbing to the monastery.

Cable Cars
Across the Nandihar River, about 12km north of the bazaar on the KKH, watch for the Cable Cars (some of them just rickety seats suspended from a single cable) that connect villages on the west side of the river to the KKH. For a cheap (make an offer) thrill, try one yourself.

Bournemouth Eye
Tucked into the Pleasure Gardens is the Bournemouth Eye. Some say a trip in this hot air-balloon cures vertigo. As ascents to 150m last only about 15 minutes, at least you'll find out fast if they're right. The views from the top encompass 25 miles and are amazing.

Rise gently into the air with Yeolgigutema Park Ballooning. Although the balloon stays tethered to the ground, it doesn't operate when Jejudo's notorious wind is blowing.
The balloon site is not on a bus route, so take a taxi or walk .
