    Blog: Snarky Tofu - 17 February 2012

Tobie Openshaw and I have been hitting the hot springs around northern Taiwan together for a few years. We’ve soaked in sulfur springs from both sides of Yamingshan to the less fragrant (but no less beautiful) pools of Wulai. Tobie, a passionate photographer, has long expressed a desire to take photos of people enjoying the springs, asking managers for permission to do just that on more than one occasion. The request is usually politely declined.

  9. Lonely Planet's Best in Travel names Taiwan

    Blog: Snarky Tofu - 1 November 2011

Just a quick shout out to my peeps at Lonely Planet for naming Taiwan one of their top 10 countries for 2012, and to my people in Taiwan for being named.I was going to use the phrase "making the list," which in most cases would be more appropriate. However, for Taiwan, the idea of being named has special meaning.I need to cut this entry short and explore LA by Bicycle. Many pictures to share soon. Please enjoy this video from Kou Chou Ching entitled "Your Name is Taiwan".

  12. Send No Money Now!

    Blog: Snarky Tofu - 21 September 2011

I was just reminded that today marks the 12th anniversary of the day Taiwanese refer to simply as "Jiǔ'èryī", or "9/21" - the day a major earthquake hit Taiwan, killing over 2000 people.  I've been so focused on writing about Taiwan for travel (just finished two articles on Taiwan for Lonely Planet / BBC) and focusing on an upcoming interview with NPR (That's National Public Radio for readers outside of the USA...the interview concerns Taiwanese identity on the eve of another anniversary, arguably one whose relevance to Taiwan is, well, less arguable - the 100th anniversary of Su

  17. 7 Essential OTC Medications to Carry When Traveling

    Blog: Flying Coach - 26 April 2011

I am a big fan of natural medicine and have more than once found that a natural form of medicine has healed me permanently where the traditional Western doctors could only dull my pain. That being said, everything has its place and when you are traveling, you want to get out and see things, not [...]

  19. No One is Sleeping

    Blog: Snarky Tofu - 15 March 2011

Crickets and Geckos are competing chirps, and the moon is squeezing through narrow metal slats. I could close them, but why bother? No One is Sleeping, not in the village, not on the Peninsula, maybe not in the world, great parts of which are preparing for the cutting room floor. Why should I sleep? Dogs are grumbling, and people with them. This is not a quiet night, even though the wind refuses to howl.

  21. Shilin night market, Taipei, Taiwan

Blog: An American in London - 7 December 2010

Night markets are a feature of many Southeast-Asian cities (well, definitely cities with large Chinese populations, anyway), and while I appreciate the beauties of a sunny daytime market in, say, France and Italy, in my opinion, night markets are the best of the market genre. First, they’re practical.  When you’re in a hot, tropic climate, [...]

  22. A Little Food…Tasty Street Eats in Taipei, Taiwan

    Blog: A Little Adrift - A RTW Travelogue - 6 December 2010

My 15 hour long layover in Taipei may not have been enough time to settle in and truly explore all that Taipei, Taiwan has to offer but it’s plenty enough time to eat! There were moments where the Asian culture shock was creeping up but the familiar pace of a city extinguished a lot of the potential angst. Instead of focusing on being lost throughout the day I followed my nose along the streets of Taipei, allowing the locals on their lunch breaks to dodge around me as I poked my ...

  23. A Little Tip…A Marathon 15 hr Layover in Taipei

    Blog: A Little Adrift - A RTW Travelogue - 3 December 2010

My fifteen hour layover in Taipei, Taiwan was long…fifteen hours in a city is that in-between length of time. Perhaps not long enough to really justify renting a hotel room but an exhausting marathon of site-seeing without a resting spot. And though my Taipei layover was way longer than I would normally choose, I had little choice in the matter so I embraced the craziness of filling that much time without a home-base and explored the city on the three recommendations from my Taiwanese friend Ben (met him in Belize actually!). Three ...
