Lady in the Balkans
Blog: A Lady in London - 3 October 2011
Most people thought I was crazy to travel to the Balkans by myself. I was lectured on safety, on health, on everything imaginable. But I had been curious about the region for years, not least because the only thing I really knew about it related to the conflicts in the 1990’s. There was surely more [...]

Lady in Skopje
Blog: A Lady in London - 27 September 2011
Skopje reminded me of Tomorrowland. I mean that in every sense of the word. In the Disneyland sense, it looked like a 1960’s version of what the future thankfully didn’t turn out to look like. In the modern sense, new, futuristic buildings and public spaces were popping up everywhere in the capital of Macedonia. There [...]

Lady on Lake Ohrid
Blog: A Lady in London - 26 September 2011
Lake Ohrid is paradise. Straddling the border between Albania and Macedonia, the ancient body of water lies at the base of green mountains and stone fortresses. Its perimeter is dotted with towns and villages that are home to some of the most important churches in Macedonian Orthodox history. The most famous of these is aptly [...]

Holes in Macedonian Fort in Skopje – Photo of the Day
Blog: Vagobond.com - 20 May 2011
Much of Skopje is new and modern but walking through the fort, up the hill, and here and there, I did notice a few holes.

Halved Over Ohrid
Blog: Joe's Trippin' - 8 May 2011
It is rare for me to be so divided over a place, to both love somewhere and hate it at the same time. But the lakeside town of Ohrid in south-western Macedonia did that to me.

FYROM Skopje, Without Love
Blog: Joe's Trippin' - 7 May 2011
Some places are worth going back to. Although my goal is to continuously explore the unknown, there are times when either by design or accident i end up visiting the same place again and again. In 2004, i found myself wandering through the Balkan states, as i was moving from one contract to another.

Things to do in Skopje

Skopje isn’t what leaps to mind when you think of European cities, is it? It’s probably among the lesser known capitals, along with Chisinau. To me, it was the easiest...Things to do in Skopje is a post from Sophie's World

Skopje, Macedonia
Blog: Vagobond.com - 24 March 2011
The bus trip from Nis to Skopje was something that just really needed to happen. Serbia and I were like peanut butter and tunafish, we just didn't go together at all.

Nis Fortress – Important Serbian Historical Place
Blog: Vagobond.com - 23 March 2011
Before I leave Serbia (actaully, I already have) I want to give a quick impression of Nis which is the first stop from Sofia, Bulgaria when you enter Serbia by bus and in my case, was also the last stop before I left for Skopje, Macedonia (also by bus).

Where I’ve Been…hostels, hotels, and couches.
Blog: Vagobond.com - 12 March 2011
Travel around the world and you are sure to want to write about it. One thing you will discover is that finding the time to write about your travels isn't always easy. Far too often you have to put things off until you have some down time and if you are doing things right, you won't have much of that!

Happy Valentines Day from Vagobond!
Blog: Vagobond.com - 15 February 2011
I took a night bus to Sofia, a night train to Istanbul, and a night flight to Casablanca followed by a day train to Fes, a grand taxi to Sefrou, and a petit taxi to the Souidi house and I got to deliver the flowers myself. From the smile on her face (and of course her words and kisses), I think my Valentines surprise did the trick. The only problem is ...how the hell am I ever going to top that next year?

Losing Daylight.
Blog: Murmurs from a foriegn land. - 9 November 2010
Ohrid, Macedonia. After the all you can eat breakfast of toast, coffee, deciding when to go to the bus stop and just downright laziness; Kevin, 2 Dutch guys and myself head off to the bus station. Crammed in to a small 4 door hatchback with backpacks squishing us into the thing. We get ripped off [...]

Skopje, Macedonia The bus from Istanbul left at 5pm and made its way to the border between Bulgaria and Turkey. We arrive shortly before sun down. But we’re stuck here waiting in a massive line for the next 2-3 hours. The road into Turkey seems fine, the road out is huge. I bide my time [...]

Macedonia: There's Something In The Water
Blog: AlpacaSuitcase - 27 September 2010
A big part of our kids’ education while traveling the Mediterranean is centered on history: particularly Egyptian, Greek and Roman history with some Ottoman Empire thrown in as well. Throughout their (and our) travel-based history lesson, it has occurred to us that the Balkan area of Macedonia has disproportionately contributed more world leaders than just about any other region in the world, save for the long line of Roman emperors from the Italian peninsula.

Ohrid, Macedonia and sleeping in a night club
Blog: 501 Places - 20 September 2010
If I could share one piece of advice with anyone travelling to the Balkans it would be this: whenever you find yourself in a town packed with partying Serbs and someone tells you it might get noisy, you should listen. We didn’t take the warning we received too seriously and the resulting experience taught us [...]Ohrid, Macedonia and sleeping in a night club is a post from: 501 Places

Behind the crowds: people watching in the Balkans
Blog: 501 Places - 11 September 2010
One of the greatest pleasures of travelling through the western Balkan region was the fact that as tourists we were always given our own space to observe, experience and interact if and when we were happy to do so. I mean this as a contrast to those many places where as a visitor from western [...]Behind the crowds: people watching in the Balkans is a post from: 501 Places

A few reflections from a trip in the Balkans
Blog: 501 Places - 9 September 2010
After a little over two weeks away it’s nice to get back to posting on 501 Places again. Albania, Macedonia, Montenegro, Bosnia and Hercegovina and Croatia provided much for me to ponder and share in the next dozen or so posts; beauty, sadness, the kindness of strangers and the scars of a bitter war are [...]A few reflections from a trip in the Balkans is a post from: 501 Places

Day 192: A day in the world's newest capital
Blog: Diaries of a Vagabonding Couple - 22 August 2010
Lake Ohrid We're passing through Macedonia en route eastwards to Bulgaria. Made a short stopover at Lake Ohrid, Europe's oldest and deepest ("and cleanest" joked a local). Nice little old town that carried a faint aura of glamour without matching prices. It's a party town in summer - our room was right above two clubs blasting hits from the last two decades, enough to keep us awake in bed til

Thunder and lightening…no problem. No path, whatever. Once you see how beautiful Dragash, Kosovo is nothing will keep you away from the dramatic mountains and the fresh air. Here is a short introduction to the Dragash Hiking Guide, a project I’m working on to be the first to map out hiking routes in this remote area of southern Kosovo. Not a bad way to spend the weekend! By the beard of Zeus
Blog: Send The Bugger Back - 17 October 2009
The thing I’m wanting from Greece most … warmth. There’s no heating at all in the bathroom at the guesthouse I’ve been staying at and when in the shower this morning the water started to cool just after I’d applied shower gel to my body, it was then a frantic race to get as much [...]
